Iúri Leitão and Rui Oliveira got Portugal’s first-ever Olympic gold medal outside of athletics with a men’s track cycling madison win in at the Paris Games on Saturday.

The Portuguese duo scored 20 points for lapping the other teams in the 200-lap race plus another 35 from the sprints for a total of 55 points.

Italy’s Simone Consonni and Elia Viviani claimed silver, while Tokyo 2020 champion Michael Mørkøv and team-mate Niklas Larsen led Denmark to bronze.

Leitão and Oliveira gave Portugal their first gold at the Paris Games. Previously, the nation had five golds in Olympics history - all of them from athletics events.
