Al Gharafa’s Assim Madibo hailed his team’s resilience and the support of their fans after securing a 1-0 victory over United Arab Emirates’ Shabab Al Ahli, sealing their place in the AFC Champions League Elite 2024-25 group stage.

Ferjani Sassi’s second-half header proved to be the decisive moment at the Al Bayt Stadium on Tuesday, with Shabab Al Ahli unable to find an equaliser despite multiple attempts.

"The match was challenging against a strong opponent, but at certain moments, securing the result mattered more than the performance,” said midfielder Madibo.

"Reaching the AFC Champions League Elite competition was our main goal, and considering we’re just starting the season, I’m pleased with how we played.”

Madibo also praised the defensive efforts of his teammates, highlighting the significance of the team’s spirit and the impact of their supporters.

"Our defence stood strong today. Shabab Al Ahli are a tough team but we showed great team spirit, which, along with the incredible support from our fans, was the key to our victory.”

As the Qatari side turn their attention to the group stage of the continent’s premier club competition, Madibo expressed confidence in their preparation. "We have enough time (to prepare) for this competition, and I congratulate our fans whom we play for.”

Shabab Al Ahli, meanwhile, will compete in the AFC Champions League Two 2024-25, with both draws set to take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Friday.

Al Gharafa will be playing Al Ahli in the second round of the Ooredoo Stars League at the Al Thumama Stadium on Sunday. The kick-off is at 8.30pm.
