DusseldorfcTypeface:> Several fans are planning to boycott the German Super Cup final between Bayer Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart on Saturday. Fan groups said they will not be supporting their teams this time because the game is purely a commercial event without any sporting significance. “From our point of view, the German Super Cup has no sporting appeal as a competition and, therefore, has no relevance for us,” Stuttgart fan groups said. Leverkusen fans, meanwhile, criticized the fact that their club will play a “funfair cup” instead of the German Cup, which starts this weekend. Leverkusen and Stuttgart had their German Cup matches postponed to the end of August due to the Super Cup. The German Super Cup is considered the official kick-off of a new season in Germany and features the Bundesliga champion and the German Cup winner. Since Leverkusen won both the league and the Cup last season, they will play against Stuttgart, who finished second in the Bundesliga. (DPA)
