Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer has decided to retire from the Switzerland national team, he said in a statement published by the Swiss football federation on Monday.

"It was a great honour and privilege to represent my country at the highest level for 12 years,” the former Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayern Munich player said.

Sommer made his debut for the national team in May 2012 and since 2014 he has participated in three European championships and two World Cups as Switzerland’s number one.

His last match was the Euro 2024 quarter-finals against England on July 6, when Switzerland lost after penalties.

"With the conclusion of another great Euros in our neighbouring country Germany, where I previously spent unforgettable years in the Bundesliga, the time has now come to say goodbye,” Sommer said.
