Copenhagen: A woman lost her life during an attempted crossing from the Faroe Islands to Norway in a replica Viking ship, authorities said.

The ship capsized near Stad on the western Norwegian coast on Tuesday evening. Five people were pulled from the water and are in good condition, southern Norwegian rescue services said. The woman, who was initially reported missing, was found on Wednesday morning by a coastguard vessel a few hundred metres from the accident site and was declared dead at the scene, police said, according to the NTB news agency.

Media from Norway and the Faroe Islands reported that the woman was a 29-year-old US citizen living in Florida who was originally from Mexico.

The six adventurers had attempted to sail and row from the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic to Norway as part of "The Viking Voyage” project using the reconstructed Viking ship.

With the approximately 930km journey in the open and engine-less ship named Naddoddur, the Swiss skipper and expedition leader Andy Fitze aimed to bring the world of Vikings and seafaring history to life, the Faroese news outlet Local.fo reported. (DPA)
