Rome: A man, 54, hid his dead mother in a freezer for years on the Italian Mediterranean island of Sardinia in order to keep collecting her pension.

The body of the 78-year-old woman was discovered by the police during a search after neighbours began to wonder about her absence. The freezer was on the ground floor.

The man, from the city of Sarroch, is now facing serious fraud and concealment of death charges. Initial findings show the son earned several thousand euros from the alleged fraud.

The woman is believed to have died around two years ago during the coronavirus, but presumably of natural causes. An autopsy is to determine the cause of death. (DPA)
