QatarEnergy on Sunday unveiled plans for a new world-scale urea production complex that will significantly boost Qatar’s urea production capacity, reinforcing the country’s role in enhancing global food security.

The ambitious project involves the construction of three ammonia production lines and four new urea production trains in Mesaieed Industrial City. This development will elevate Qatar’s urea production from the current 6 million tonnes per annum to 12.4 million tonnes per annum. The first of these new urea trains is anticipated to commence production before the end of the decade.

The announcement was made by Minister of State for Energy Affairs and QatarEnergy President and CEO HE Saad Sherida Al Kaabi during a press conference held at QatarEnergy’s headquarters in Doha.

Al Kaabi highlighted that this project represents a significant expansion of Qatar’s 50-year legacy in ammonia and urea production, aiming to establish the State of Qatar as the world’s largest urea producer. This development will play a crucial role in supporting global food production and security.

The new urea production facilities will capitalise on Mesaieed Industrial City’s existing infrastructure, including its extensive export port, which is one of the largest fertilizer and petrochemical export facilities in the MENA region.
