Bayern Munich bosses were “very surprised” that their midfielder Jamal Musiala was not nominated to the prestigious Ballon d’Or awards.

“I don’t begrudge any player who was nominated for the Ballon d’Or, but we at FC Bayern are very surprised that Jamal Musiala is missing from this list,” Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl told dpa.  “Jamal was one of the most exceptional players at Euro 2024, was selected to the team of the tournament and was among the top scorers,” he said.

“Bayern also reached the semi-finals of the Champions League thanks to Jamal’s great performances. The fact that he is now not even among the 30 best players of the past season is completely incomprehensible to us,” Eberl added.

The shortlist for the award was unveiled by France Football on Wednesday night, with the winners to be announced at a ceremony in Paris on October 28.

Forward Harry Kane is the only Bayern player in contention for the main prize, while Mathys Tel was nominated for the 2024 Kopa Trophy as one of the world’s best young players.

Recently retired Toni Kroos, Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz and defender Mats Hummels, who this week joined Roma, represent Germany on the list.

Musiala is currently with the Germany national team as the squad prepares for the upcoming Nations League games against Hungary on Saturday and the Netherlands on Tuesday.
