Mauricio Pochettino was named the new coach of the United States men’s football team on Tuesday, tasked with leading the squad through the 2026 World Cup on home soil.

Pochettino, 52, has extensive experience managing top European clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea.

"Mauricio is a serial winner with a deep passion for player development,” US Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker said. "His track record speaks for itself.”

The Argentine coach, who won the Ligue 1 title with Paris Saint-Germain, has been out of work since leaving Chelsea by mutual consent after the end of last season. He takes over from Gregg Berhalter, who was dismissed in July following the team’s disappointing performance at the Copa America.

Pochettino said that his decision to join the US team wasn’t just about football, but also about the journey that the team and the country are on.

"The opportunity to lead the US men’s national team, in front of fans who are just as passionate as the players, is something I couldn’t pass up,” Pochettino said.

"I see a group of players full of talent and potential, and together, we’re going to build something special that the whole nation can be proud of.”

The US are trying to rebuild their national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which they will co-host with Mexico and Canada.
