BucharestcTypeface:> Washington has approved a pending multi-billion dollar sale of 32 F-35 fighter jets to fellow NATO member Romania.

“This commitment is a testament to the strong partnership between our two nations,” US Ambassador to Romania Kathleen Kavalec said in a statement on Friday.

“Romania is a key NATO Ally in promoting security and stability in the Black Sea region and beyond. The F-35As will provide Romania with unparalleled air defence capabilities and enhance interoperability among NATO air forces.” The first delivery is expected by 2031, according to the statement.

The US embassy in Bucharest estimated the planned sale was worth $6.4bn, while the US State Department put the figure at $7.2bn. (DPA)
