Around 113 Filipino certified public accountants (CPA) and associate members took part in a seminar on accountant's role in financial statement (FS) analysis held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel recently.
Hotel recently.
Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (Picpa) Doha President Sharon Dela Cruz presided over the seminar which generated a four-hour Continuing Professional Development (CPD) unit for CPA attendees. CPD credit units are necessary for a Philippine-licensed professional to enable Filipino CPAs to renew their Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) CPA licence. A total of 120 CPD credit units are required for a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) for a three-year cycle.
The seminar kicked off with an icebreaker workshop facilitated by Reynaldo Lunasin which prepared the participants for an informative session. After more than one hour of warm-up activity, the main speaker of the event Robert Lepon introduced the participants to the featured topic of the seminar. He discussed a case scenario wherein knowledge of financial ratios played a key role in determining the solution or in arriving at the needed information like the case of an Inventory Fire Loss.
Lepon stressed that an accountant's role can be similar to a doctor's who needs to know how to diagnose the patient's problem. In this case, the accountant must be able to know the client's problem based on the given facts or information in order to find the cure or solution to the problem, he added.
The speaker shared his rich audit experience by providing a simulated or a sample case scenario. He also emphasised the importance of having an annual audit done by independent auditors.
Participants lauded the event as helpful to their field of expertise. One of them, Rhea Rose Relivo said,"I have realised that an accountant's work is never ending and our role in a business is comparable to that of a doctor. A business cannot be successful without the support of an accountant."
Another participant, Abeer Badran, commented,"Accounting is not just about numbers or about generating positive results. Behind it is a more fascinating and endless perspective of analysing transactions, using financial ratios to make right decisions and to enhance and add value to an organisation."
Ruby Jane Borja remarked,"Financial statement analysis will give you competitive advantage."
The seminar concluded with the completion of the final workshop activity which is a case study.
PICPA Doha leadership announced that the team is preparing for their next seminar on Advance Excel scheduled for October 15 and 22. For more details, contact [email protected].
