Angel Correa struck a stoppage-time equaliser as Atletico Madrid fought back to draw 1-1 with derby rivals Real after play was briefly suspended when home fans threw objects at goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Real led through Eder Militao’s 64th-minute strike when objects, including lighters, were thrown from supporters behind the goal at former Atletico goalkeeper Courtois.

The referee took the players off in the 69th minute and an announcement was made to call for calm or risk the game being abandoned.

Following a delay of around 20 minutes, play resumed - and there was further drama when Correa broke clear to stab in an equaliser, which was initially ruled out before being given following a VAR review.

Atletico finished with 10 men as Marcos Llorente was eventually shown a straight red card after an over-the-top challenge on Real substitute Fran Garcia.

Real sit three points behind leaders Barcelona, whose perfect start ended with defeat at Osasuna, with Atletico also unbeaten in third.

Atletico had made a positive start, as Julian Alvarez tested Courtois early on.

At the other end, Jan Oblak made a smart save from Federico Valverde’s long-range effort, with the Uruguay midfielder then firing a free-kick wide.

Real, missing the injured Kylian Mbappe, threatened again when a smart turn from Vinicius Junior picked out Jude Bellingham, but his shot was straight at Oblak.

The visitors started the second half on the front foot, with Rodrygo sending his shot over from the edge of the box after a short corner before they broke the deadlock through another well-worked set piece.

Luka Modric sent a quick free-kick down the left for Vinicius to run on and his cross towards the back post found Militao, who took the ball down on his chest before lashing it into the net. With the atmosphere in the Wanda Metropolitano turning hostile, objects were thrown towards Courtois.

After Atletico captain Koke, defender Jose Gimenez and manager Diego Simeone all went over to remonstrate with the home fans behind the goal, referee Mateo Busquets Ferrer signalled for the players to return to the dressing rooms.

When play restarted, Real soon sparked into life with Vinicius turning his marker outside the penalty area and firing in a low drive which Oblak pushed away.

With nine minutes left, Courtois pulled off a smart one-handed save from Atletico substitute Samuel Lino.

Antoine Griezmann, making his 500th LaLiga appearance, went close with a 25-yard free-kick before Atletico salvaged a point deep into stoppage time.

Correa raced clear down the left, beat the offside trap, and bundled the ball in after Courtois had come racing out.

The goal was chalked out, for what was assumed to be handball as it bounced back on to the Atletico winger and into the net, but after a quick video assistant referee (VAR) review the equaliser stood, sparking wild celebrations for the home fans.

Atletico finished with 10 men when Llorente was sent off following a VAR review of his lunge on Garcia.
