At least six people were killed and six others injured by Russian shelling in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson on Tuesday, as Moscow’s forces entered the key eastern town of Vuhledar.

Authorities said the Kherson city centre came under artillery fire at around 9 am (0600 GMT), with shells landing near the market and at a public transport stop.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha denounced what he called "another barbarian Russian attack” on civilians in Kherson in a post on the social media platform X.

The death toll was initially reported by the state prosecutor’s office as seven, before being revised to six.

Kherson is the capital of the eponymous southern region and is situated on the Dnipro river.

Russian troops captured the city in early 2022, shortly after the beginning of Moscow’s full-scale invasion, but were forced to retreat to behind the Dnipro later that year following a Ukrainian counteroffensive.
