Aside from hosting basketball tournaments for Filipinos in Qatar, Pinoy Basketball of Qatar (PIBAQ) takes pride in its strong programme aimed at engaging Filipino youth in sport, particularly basketball.
The group has hosted several basketball clinics for young basketball enthusiasts led by its in-house coaches. It has also brought to Qatar some of the big names in the history of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) to inspire the participants and give them opportunity to be trained by their basketball heroes. The camps received overwhelming support from parents and the youth.
This year, Pibaq will once again be holding a basketball camp featuring retired PBA basketball player Allan Caidic at the Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) Multi-purpose Training Hall in Al Gharafa from October 17 to 19.
Allan Caidic, known in the PBA as the Triggerman, is regarded as one of the greatest shooters in the history of the Philippine basketball. This is the third time he will be conducting the shooting camp in Qatar.
"Following the success of the second Allan Caidic Youth Basketball Shooting Camp (ACBC) held in July 2016, PIBAQ is excited to host him once again for the third edition of the successful programme. Around 40 Filipino youth in the age groups of 10 to 14 and 18 to 19 will take part in the three-day camp. Caidic's shooting camp in Qatar is the last leg of the ACBC in the Middle East," Carido told Qatar Tribune.
The 2016 ACBC event was attended by 21 youngsters. The exclusive shooting course featured a three-hour -a-day shooting sessions with Caidic. The upcoming event is expected to be another informative and rich session for the participants.
Carido also said that aside from the camp, Caidic will be visiting Philippine School Doha for a brief meet and greet with the students.
Early this year, Pibaq launched its annual mid-year conference The Ambassador Cup 2019. The tournament is the group's way of showing appreciation to the Ambassador of the Philippines in Qatar and the important role he plays in advancing the welfare of Filipino expatriates in the country.
Pibaq was founded in 2005 and hosted its first- ever Pibaq conference the following year. Over the years, the group has become an important driving force in promoting Filipino basketball in Qatar. It has also earned the recognition of officials of QBF.
Pibaq is the only Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) voting member in Qatar. As the SBP arm in Qatar, the organisation is also tasked with developing and organizing the referee programme for the Filipinos. It also regularly conducts licensing and refresher courses for game officials, which provide additional knowledge and livelihood that will benefit them even when they repatriate.
