Three times former champions Qatar were held to a 1-1 draw by United Arab Emirates in their opening Group A match of 26th Arabian Gulf Cup at the Jaber Al Mubarak Al Hamad Stadium in Kuwait on Saturday.
Akram Afif fired from the penalty spot as early in the 17th minute of the match but UAE hit back in the first minute of added time of first half with Yahya Al Ghassani finding the equalizer.
Both teams fought hard in the second session coming close to finding the target once again but failed to find another finish.
Qatar goalkeeper Meshaal Al Barsham was impressive under the bar making some super saves while UAE goalkeeper Khalid Eisa was also put to test by the Qatar forwards.
Qatar will play their next match against Oman on Tuesday at the same venue.
