Girona’s own goal misery in the Champions League continued on Wednesday when two more helped Feyenoord to a 3-2 victory in a match where each goalkeeper also saved a penalty.

Coming off an opening 1-0 defeat at Paris Saint-Germain when goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga fumbled the ball into his own net, Girona started their first European home game well with a 19th-minute lead from veteran defender David Lopez.

But Feyenoord turned matters around quickly. Yagel Herreira headed a 23rd-minute equalizer into his own net, and teenager Antoni Milambo put the Dutch 2-1 up from Igor Paixao.

It could have been 3-1 for the Dutch in the 36th, but Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga saved Ayase Ueda’s penalty to make up for a bad pass that led to Ivan Martin’s foul on Quiten Timber and the spot kick. It was then Feyenoord goalkeeper Simon Wellenreuther’s turn to save a Bojan Miovski spot kick in the 67th after he brought him down.

Girona did level from their Dutchman Donny van de Beek in the 73rd but six minutes later Ladislav Krejci deflected David Hancko’s intended cross into his own net to give Feyenoord first points after an opening 4-0 humbling by Bayer Leverkusen.

In the other early kick-off, Europa League champions Atalanta strolled to a 3-0 victory at Shakhtar Donetsk who are playing their European home games in Gelsekirchen, Germany, this season due to Russia’s ongoing invasion of their home country of Ukraine.

Berat Djimsiti put Atalanta 1-0 up off Ademola Lookman’s cross from the left, Lookman slotted the second into the far corner in the 44th, and Raoul Bellanova got the third three minutes after the restart for the Italians who also hit the post and crossbar.
