Qatar Cancer Society (QCS), under the leadership of Sheikh Dr Khalid bin Jaber Al Thani, has actively participated in several international conferences in recent weeks to strengthen global efforts in cancer awareness and control. At the high-level conference ‘Global Cancer Control: A Framework’ held at the University of Geneva, the ‘International Coalition for Cancer Patients’ was established, with QCS becoming a founding member. Sheikh Dr Khalid bin Jaber Al Thani was appointed as Co-Chair of both the Middle Eastern and Global Boards, a testament to Qatar’s growing influence in global cancer advocacy.

QCS also made a significant impact at the World Cancer Conference in Geneva by presenting a session titled ‘An Unspoken Reality: The Stigma of Cancer in Arabian Communities’, addressing the cultural challenges surrounding cancer stigma and proposing strategies to combat these issues. Furthermore, QCS took part in discussions on the Global Breast Cancer Initiative, emphasising the need for international collaboration to enhance early detection and reduce breast cancer mortality.

During the ‘All.Can Global Summit 2024’, QCS highlighted the importance of integrating innovative efficiency metrics into cancer care and focusing on patient-centred solutions to improve outcomes. At another conference organised by the Cities Fighting Cancer Foundation and the University of Melbourne, QCS discussed global funding disparities in tackling cancer.

Sheikh Dr Khalid bin Jaber Al Thani underscored the importance of international engagement for cancer control, stating that such participations allow for the exchange of knowledge and experience, thereby improving care and treatment strategies in Qatar and the wider region.

He added, “These participations reflect the Qatar Cancer Society’s commitment to leadership in awareness, advocacy, and research at the global level. The society aims to coordinate with relevant stakeholders, stay updated on the latest treatment methods, and enhance awareness about cancer and prevention methods.”

He noted that these international engagements have allowed Qatar Cancer Society to expand its collaborative network significantly. As a result of discussions with numerous international organisations, QCS has identified 14 potential partnerships. These partnerships are focused on enhancing cancer research, improving treatment methodologies, and raising global awareness about cancer.

In the efforts of the QCS, Dr Hadi Mohammed Abu Rasheed, the scientific advisor at QCS, presented three research abstracts aimed at improving the quality of life for patients with colorectal and lung cancer in Qatar.

Dr Hadi stated, “We strive to provide comprehensive care based on scientific research, which contributes to enhancing the patient experience.”

He emphasised the importance of collaboration with international research institutions to exchange knowledge and develop effective strategies for cancer control.

He also highlighted the role of awareness in promoting early detection and prevention methods.
