The death toll in the southern Ukrainian city of Odessa has risen to eight following a Russian missile attack on the port, authorities said on Thursday.

“A 26-year-old man has died in hospital due to the injuries he sustained,” the region’s military governor, Oleh Kiper, wrote on Telegram.

It comes after he earlier announced the death of a 46-year-old dock worker in hospital following Wednesday’s attack.

On Wednesday evening, authorities had recorded six people dead and a dozen injured after the strike on Odessa. Kiper did not provide information about the exact location of the attack.

Observers had reported a ballistic missile heading towards the port of Chornomorsk near Odessa. Local groups posted calls for blood donations on social media.

A further two people were killed in a second Russian drone attack on Wednesday on the south-eastern Ukrainian industrial city of Kryvyi Rih, which damaged a five-storey apartment building.

Ukraine has been defending itself against a full-scale Russian invasion since February 2022.
