DOHA: Qatari mountaineering legend Sheikha Asma bint Thani Al Thani has created a unique record by becoming the first Qatari and Arab woman to achieve the Explorer’s Grand Slam after reaching Seven Summits on every continent and the North and South Poles.
It is a feat that has only been achieved by fewer than 75 people around the world.
Celebrating her achievement on Saturday, Sheikha Asma wrote on her Instagram account: "Standing on top of Carstensz Pyramid, on the 11th of October, the final summit in my journey to complete the Explorers Grand Slam.”
She added, "A journey that began in 2014 with a dream and a determination to break boundaries. Along the way, I’ve learned that persistence, no matter how challenging the road, always pays off. Each summit represents a step closer to realizing my potential, but more importantly, it’s a testament to staying true to your dreams, even when the path ahead seems impossible.”
The Explorer’s Grand Slam is one of the world’s most prestigious adventure challenges, involving climbing the highest peak on each continent and skiing to the North and South Poles.
"I am deeply honoured to be the first Arab woman and Qatari person to achieve this milestone,” Sheikha Asma said in her post.
"This is for every young girl with big dreams—there are no limits to what we can achieve if we remain persistent and believe in ourselves. Keep climbing, keep dreaming, and know that the summit is always within reach. Lastly, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who has made this journey possible—my family, friends, teammates, and the incredible guides and support teams who stood by me every step of the way. Your unwavering belief in me has been my strength on this journey.”
