Qatar participated in the 21st session of the Arab Electronic Media Committee, at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Arab League in Cairo on Sunday.
Deputy Permanent Representative of Qatar to the Arab League Maryam Ahmed Al Shibi represented Qatar at the meeting.
In her speech, Shibi welcomed the efforts of the United Arab Emirates, represented by the UAE Media Council, to prepare the project for launching an e-platform for the Arab Electronic Media Committee by the end of 2024. This initiative was discussed by the committee as part of its agenda.
She emphasised the importance of this step in enhancing communication and facilitating access to information, reflecting the role of digital advancements in fostering Arab cooperation, especially in media and communications.
She expressed confidence that the platform would serve as an effective tool for providing services and disseminating knowledge in the field.
Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Media and Communication Sector at the Arab League Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi highlighted that the session follows up on Resolution No 547, issued by the 54th regular session of the Council of Arab Information Ministers held in Bahrain on May 29. This includes the UAE’s invitation to design and launch the website for the committee by the end of 2024 and to organise training for nominees from member states regarding its use.
Khattabi noted that the website will adhere to principles outlined in the code of conduct adopted during the session, which aims to enhance Arab media presence in the digital space while upholding the spiritual, ethical and cultural values of Arab societies.
The code also ensures that national sovereignty is respected, with a focus on social responsibility, accuracy, credibility, neutrality and fairness. It encourages promoting values of tolerance and cultural diversity, while preventing discrimination or hate speech and considering content relevant to vulnerable groups.
The 21st meeting marks the beginning of a series of sessions organised by the Technical Secretariat of the Council of Arab Information Ministers this week at the Arab League’s headquarters. The discussions aim to follow up on decisions from the 54th session in Bahrain.
Upcoming meetings include a working group on Tuesday and Wednesday to develop an Arab strategy for media literacy and information, followed by a joint meeting on Thursday focused on preparations for Kuwait’s designation as the 2025 Arab Media
