DOHA: Qatar Airports Operation and Management Company (MATAR) has achieved a significant accomplishment in the field of environmental sustainability, by obtaining the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification for the central area of Hamad International Airport (HIA), which includes the stunning indoor tropical garden known as the Orchard. This certification confirms the airport's commitment to sustainability standards and environmentally friendly building practices.
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification has become a globally recognized symbol of sustainability and one of the most prominent green building rating systems. The certification is awarded to buildings that meet stringent environmental standards based on factors such as energy efficiency, water consumption rates, air quality and material selection.
The airport’s achievement of this gold certificate reflects Hamad International Airport’s commitment to integrating the highest environmental standards into its operations, ensuring long-term performance efficiency, cost rationalization and positive impact on the environment.
The Central Concourse, which includes the Orchard Tropical Garden, was part of Phase 1A of HIA’s major expansion plan, which aimed to reduce energy consumption by 30 percent and water consumption by 55 percent across all uses. With its ongoing commitment to promoting sustainable best practices, HIA’s Central Concourse joins a relatively small number of global airports to have achieved similar certifications.
Obtaining the LEED Gold certification is a testament to Hamad International Airport’s unwavering commitment to reducing emissions and addressing climate change through continuous improvement of the environmental performance of airport facilities since the launch of its operations in 2014.
As part of its ongoing efforts to promote sustainability, the airport is leading innovative initiatives aimed at reducing waste and enhancing resource efficiency, clearly demonstrating its commitment to environmental responsibility.
