DOHA: Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has announced a new medical achievement represented by a cosmetic surgery operation that is the first of its kind due to the use of microscopic reconstructive surgery techniques for the flaps based on the perforating arteries in it.

It stated that the succesful operation was performed on a patient from Gaza who was suffering from severe back pain, the inability to walk or sit, and was in a state of near-paralysis. The surgical operation lasted about two hours, which is considered a very short period considering the severe deficiency that affected the composite tissues of the patient’s lower back area.

Dr Atallah Hamada Hamouda, Consultant and Head of the Plastic Surgery Department at Hamad Medical Corporation, said: “The success of this operation and many other complex operations is the result of applying international standards, the availability of surgical cadres and expertise, and the use of advanced medical technologies in providing healthcare to the Corporation’s patients, which has placed it in a distinguished position at the forefront of medical institutions in the region.”

He pointed out that the Plastic Surgery Department is distinguished by its multiple and continuous innovations in qualitative surgical techniques that contribute significantly to improving the quality of healthcare provided to all patients.

In the same context, Dr Salim Nour El-Din Al Lahham, Associate Consultant in the Department of Plastic Surgery and leader of the surgical team that performed the operation, said: "The operation was complex considering the size of the tissue defect, in addition to the need to use a number of flaps based on perforating arteries in an innovative and new way, in order to perform a successful restoration without causing any damage to other tissues."

He explained that after undergoing reconstructive surgery and physical therapy, the patient resumed her normal life and returned to walking and sitting without feeling any pain. It is worth noting that she arrived at Hamad Medical Corporation in a deteriorating health condition, as she was suffering from severe tissue deficiency in the back and burns in the thigh area, in addition to fungal infection as a result of not treating the wounds for a long time and the patient’s immune deficiency. A surgical debridement was performed to remove the damaged tissue and provide the patient with high-protein nutrition, and then the specific surgical intervention was performed.

He stressed that Hamad Medical Corporation’s advanced and globally superior capabilities played a major role in facilitating this unique operation. The Plastic Surgery Department has witnessed remarkable progress and achieved tremendous steps in treating complex cases, the latest and most important of which was the invention of the 'Qatar Flap', which is a scientific achievement and surgical innovation in the field of microscopic reconstructive surgery and hand surgery.
