The sales of vegetables and fruits at the local agricultural produce markets are seeing a significant increase.
A total of 316 tonnes of vegetables and fruits were sold at the four local agricultural product markets ” Al Mazrouaa, Al Khor, Al Dhakira, Al Wakrah and Al Shamal ” in the third week of the seventh season (Nov 9 and 10).
While 136 tonnes of vegetables were sold during the third week, the sale of fruits at these markets amounted to 180 tonnes.
The four markets have also succeeded in marketing about 3,020 kg of fish, 382 cartons of eggs, 2,515 birds, 563 kg of milk and 75 kg of Qatari honey.
In addition, a total of 498 heads of sheep and goats were sold, 352 of which were slaughtered in the cultivated yard in Al Mazrouaa.
The local agricultural product markets achieved record sales of Qatari vegetables and fruits in the previous season, reaching about 12,000 tonnes, at affordable prices, as well as sales of fish, birds, eggs, milk and livestock.
Compared with the previous five seasons, the 2017-18 season saw a significant increase in sales at these yards (Al Khor and Al Dhakira, Al Wakrah and Al Shamal).
While vegetable sales saw an increase of 35 percent, fruits witnessed 341 percent rise, birds 29 percent, sheep 14 percent and dairy products about 139 percent.
The local agricultural product markets aim at supporting the Qatari farmers by reducing marketing costs and encouraging them to increase the local production.
They also aim at encouraging owners of small or neglected farms to transfer them into productive farms.
