Pakistan’s parliament on Monday approved a set of amendments to the constitution to curtail the power of the judiciary amid tensions between the government and assertive judges, officials said.

The ruling coalition led by the party of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif won a required two-thirds majority by a narrow margin of just one vote.

The amendments empower the parliament to pick the country’s top judge, something experts said would help provide a greater balance of power between the two institutions.  Tensions between the government of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the judges have been simmering since controversial national elections in February.
