HanoicTypeface:> Vietnam’s National Assembly on Monday elected army General Luong Cuong to serve as the country’s next president. It marks the fourth president in less than two years for Vietnam, a single-party Communist state traditionally known for its political stability. Cuong, 67, joined the army in 1975, before becoming the head of the political department of the Vietnam People’s Army in 2016, and a member of the Politburo, the most powerful decision-making body of the Communist Party.  The National Assembly earlier confirmed that To Lam would stand down as president. He was appointed to the post in May, five months after former president Vo Van Thuong resigned amid a sweeping corruption crackdown. Since August, To Lam had also been holding the post of general secretary of the Communist Party, following the death of former leader Nguyen Phu Trong in July. (dpa)
