Shantiniketan Indian School secured first place in the Inter-school Sustainability Competition organised by the University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST). The competition, held on October 23, aimed to foster awareness and innovation in environmental preservation and sustainable practices among students.

Students from various educational institutions in Qatar participated in the contest, presenting creative solutions to pressing sustainability challenges.

Out of the 84 project submissions from schools across Qatar, 35 were shortlisted for the final round based on their creativity, feasibility and potential for real-world application.

Shantiniketan Indian School’s team, consisting of Ashika Maryam, Akshaya Ramasamy, Diviya Darshini, Shahama Shereen, Hana Mohamed, Fadi bin Sameer, Dakshit Damsura, Sinan bin Faisal, and Athifa Jahangir, participated with their project titled ‘Sustainable City Ecotopia’. This project envisioned an eco-friendly urban environment through key innovations, including:

• Bio plastics to reduce reliance on traditional plastics and minimise environmental pollution.

• Wind energy solutions to harness renewable energy for the city.

• A wastewater treatment plant designed for efficient water recycling and conservation.

• An air quality monitoring system to ensure clean and breathable air for city residents.

After a rigorous evaluation, Shantiniketan Indian School was awarded first place in the competition, a recognition of the team’s hard work, creativity, and commitment to addressing global environmental challenges. The students were supported by Aneesha and Nithya, with guidance from the Head of the Department of Science Abdul Saleem Mohamed and Head of the Department Social Science Payal Das.
