Former Italy international Mario Balotelli is set to make a return to the Serie A, according to media reports. La Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper said that Balotelli will sign a contract with Genoa until the end of the season. On Monday, the forward is set to complete the medical checks. Genoa are third-last in the table and have only won once in eight matches so far.
Balotelli made his breakthrough in Italy’s top division with Inter Milan in 2007. Three years later, he moved to Manchester City, which was followed by spells at AC Milan, Liverpool, Nice and Olympique Marseille, among others. Most recently, he played for Adana Demirspor in Turkey, but opted not to extend his contract after the season and has been without a club ever since.
Balotelli’s career has been surrounded by controversies off the pitch. He has been given a reputation by the media for being a difficult character and taking part in questionable activities. He was once described by coach José Mourinho as “unmanageable.” (DPA)
