In a major step towards achieving self-sufficiency in Qatar’s medical sector, two local firms have joined hands to meet 100 percent demand for medical devices in the country.
Qatari German Company for Medical Devices (QGMD) and Al Jazira Healthcare Group on Wednesday signed a cooperation agreement for manufacturing medical devices to be used in Qatar.
QGMD Board Member Saleh Majid al Khulaifi and Al Jazira Healthcare Group Chief Executive Officer Mohamed al Hajiri signed the agreement that will make QGMD the main company to sterilise all products of Al-Jazira Healthcare Group.
Talking to Qatar Tribune on the sidelines of the agreement signing ceremony, Hajiri said the agreement would fully make up for the loss of sterilizing facilities that were availed earlier from one of the blockading countries.
QGMD has technical capabilities to provide various sterilisation methods and devices such as Ethylene Oxide Steriliser (ETO Gas) with a capacity of up to 30 cubic metres, in addition to steam sterilisers with capabilities to meet the needs of medical supplies in Qatar.
All sterilisation tests are conducted inside the QGMD factory to ensure that the sterilisation process has been done successfully using the most recent methods and international standards.
"The agreement will be instrumental in saving time and cost and developing synergy between two local companies producing medical supplies and instruments,” Hajiri said.
The complete process of manufacturing various types of syringes and other medical devices under the partnership, Hajiri said, will start from the first quarter of 2019.
Hajiri also revealed that work on phase one of Al Jazira Medical and Industrial Supplies Company’s medical device facility is expected to be over soon.
Once the facility is operational, he said, 100 percent local demand for a number of medical devices will be met.
Commenting on the agreement, Khulaifi said the agreement would see two competitors working together for the interest of the nation.
"It is very important to achieve self-sufficiency in the field of medicine as it is one of the essential areas like food that we cannot afford to ignore for long. The sudden disruption in medical supplies after the blockade made most of the local firms operating in the medical sector consolidate their efforts to achieve the required level of self-sufficiency. The agreement is aimed towards achieving this goal,” Khulaifi said.
QGMD has a fully qualified team with high expertise in the field of medical manufacturing, he said.
Since its inception in 2007, Khulaifi said, QGMD manufactures all sorts of syringes and needles, and carrying out sterilisation process is one of the company’s main expertise which makes it an ideal choice in the healthcare industry.
"We are capable of meeting 100 percent demand for various types of sterilized syringes in the country. We are also working towards meeting the local demand for other medical devices,” he said.
