Uruguay’s presidential election is headed to a run-off following Sunday’s vote that put left-wing candidate Yamandú Orsi strongly in first place over his conservative rival, but short of an outright majority.

Orsi, from the left-wing alliance Frente Amplio, received 43% and will face off against Álvaro Delgado from the ruling conservative party Partido Nacional, which received 27% of the vote.

The run-off will take place on November 24. Around 2.7 million people were called to vote in the small South American country, where voting is mandatory. The popular incumbent Luis Lacalle Pou is constitutionally barred from running again.

No radical changes expected The leftist Orsi aims to combat poverty and decisively tackle corruption if elected. The conservative Delgado announced plans to continue the current government’s policies and reduce bureaucracy. According to polls, Uruguayans are mainly concerned about security, the economic situation, and jobs.
