The College of Law (LAWC) at Qatar University (QU) held a roundtable with the United Nations entitled ‘The Impact of UNCITRAL Model Laws in Supporting Qatar’s Economic Diversification.’ The United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) is the principal legal body of the United Nations system in the field of international trade law. Law professors, faculty, graduate students and researchers participated in this roundtable.
The UNCITRAL Days for Arab States initiative is an academic gathering organized by universities and higher education institutions in the region to discuss and review issues arising from UNCITRAL’s areas of work, including the integration and modernization of international trade law rules through the ratification and use of legal texts and models. The event also sought to raise awareness about UNCITRAL documents and the importance of legal harmonization among the next generation of academics and decision-makers.
The roundtable focused on several key themes in international trade law and was chaired by Dr. Mohsen Hamad Al-Athba. It featured Benjamin Herisset, legal officer at the UNCITRAL Secretariat, who examined how the Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods influences investment attraction, boosts non-oil exports, and supports the establishment and market entry of small and medium enterprises in Qatar. Professor Nisreen Mahasneh provided insights on the UNCITRAL Model Law on Electronic Transferable Records from a legal standpoint in Qatar. Professor Nader Ibrahim reviewed the UNCITRAL Model Law on Warehouse Receipts, while Professor Iman Mamlouk concluded the session by discussing Qatar’s role as a hub for dispute resolution through mediation and the significance of UNCITRAL texts in this context.
LAWC roundtables encourage communication and exchange of experience, and contribute to deepening mutual understanding among legal experts from around the world. This event is an important step towards shaping the future of commercial law in line with global challenges and rapid economic transformations.
