The Las Damas de Rizal (LDR) Doha Chapter, in collaboration with the Knights of Rizal (KOR) Doha Chapter, hosted an impactful outreach program focused on breast cancer awareness on October 26, at the Migrants Workers Resource Center (MWRC).
The event was organised for women residing in the shelter, aiming to educate participants about breast cancer, provide emotional support, and foster a
sense of community among attendees.
This programme was part of a series of initiatives for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and aligned with the World Health Organization’s theme for the year, “No one should face breast cancer alone,” emphasizing the importance of support and community engagement.
Lady Dr. Anne Binondo, LDR President, welcomed attendees, introduced officers and members from both organisations, and underscored the vital role of awareness in combating breast cancer. Her speech stressed the critical role that awareness plays in combating breast cancer and highlighted the collaborative spirit between LDR and KOR.
A pivotal moment in the program was marked by a message from HE Ambassador Lilliibeth Pono of the Philippine Embassy to Qatar. She was represented by Atty. Princess Melody Bagui, the Embassy’s Legal Officer and ATN Head.
The Ambassador’s address underscored the commitment of the Philippine government to support its citizens abroad through health education and advocacy.
The highlight of the event was a Breast Cancer Awareness Session led by Dr. Karen Kristine Chi, a Diplomate of Family Medicine and Medical Director at Al Safa Medical Polyclinic’s Alkhor Branch. Dr. Chi provided valuable insights into breast cancer prevention, early detection methods, and lifestyle choices that can reduce risk factors. Her expertise empowered attendees to prioritize their health.
Adding a personal perspective, Jasmine Sakay, who was diagnosed with Stage 2 Breast Cancer in December 2020 and declared a survivor in September 2024, shared her inspirational journey. Her candid reflections on resilience, the importance of early diagnosis, and the role of community support during challenging times, resonated deeply with participants.
Dr. Elvin Fajutagana, KOR Chapter Commander, delivered closing remarks filled with hope and gratitude. He recognized the collaborative efforts of both organizations in raising awareness about breast cancer and encouraged attendees to spread knowledge within their communities.
The event concluded with snacks and gift-giving organized by the LDR Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Committee, led by Lady Theresa Ocampo, whose planning was instrumental in the initiative’s success.
This outreach program not only served as an educational platform but also reinforced the message that no one should face the battle against breast cancer alone.
By leveraging the resources of both Las Damas de Rizal and the Knights of Rizal, this initiative demonstrated the power of community partnerships in effectively tackling critical health issues such as breast cancer.
