The eastern Spanish province of Catalonia was being hit by heavy rainfall on Monday following last week’s deadly flooding in the neighbouring region of Valencia, where more than 200 people died.

The airport in the regional capital Barcelona cancelled around 70 flights and diverted another 18 on Monday, the airport administration authority Aena announced. Media outlets including the regional newspaper El Periódico published videos showing a flooded runway.

In some places the rainwater ran through the ceiling into the interior of the airport. In Valencia meanwhile, the search for missing people continued on Monday. Attention is now focused on a shopping centre in Aldaia, a suburb of the provincial capital. Water was being pumped out of the underground car park where it was feared more bodies may be discovered.
