VallettacTypeface:> Malta’s tourism authority plans to introduce new rules that will forbid Airbnb rentals in apartment blocks where the majority of owners do not want them.

The plan, announced by Malta Tourism Authority head Carlo Micallef on Tuesday, would require landlords to get condominium approval before they can apply for a short-let licence.

Landlords would then need to obtain renewed approval every three years, Micallef said.

The rule will only apply to apartments, not houses, villas or other properties with their own private door onto the street.

Short-let licences allow property owners to rent them out on holiday rental platforms like Airbnb and Booking.com.

The MTA plan, which has yet to be discussed within Malta’s parliament or voted into law, comes in response to growing complaints from apartment block residents about disruptions caused by short-term rentals, from noise to damage and improper waste disposal.(dpa)
