An Arab-European workshop, organised by the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport in Alexandria, Egypt, on Thursday commended Qatar’s pioneering role in advancing green hydrogen technology.
Held in collaboration with the European Union and the Transport and Tourism Department of the Arab League, the workshop focused on Qatar’s achievements in green hydrogen as part of an integrated study on establishing a green hydrogen supply chain. Discussions included Qatar’s development strategies in the sector and insights from international institutions and organisations.
President of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport Dr Ismail Abdel Ghaffar said the workshop reviewed successful initiatives from across the Arab world.
He highlighted Qatar’s experience as a standout example, offering valuable lessons for a potential roadmap for Arab countries to excel in this critical field.
Dr Abdel Ghaffar praised Qatar’s comprehensive approach to building a green hydrogen supply chain, which aligns with the country’s commitment to sustainable development goals.
Echoing this sentiment, Dr Sarah Al Jazzar, dean of the College of International Transport and Logistics at the Academy, noted that the workshop aimed to explore green hydrogen supply opportunities from the Arab region to Europe.
She emphasised that Qatar’s advanced technological capabilities in producing, storing, and transporting green hydrogen position it among the leaders in the field, enabling it to produce significant quantities at reduced costs, adding that Qatar’s expertise is a testament to its strategic shift toward diversifying investments beyond oil, with a strong emphasis on renewable energy, including solar power.
The European Union, she added, recognised Qatar’s achievements in this area.
The workshop featured presentations from the League of Arab States, the European Union, and the Arab Academy on building an integrated green hydrogen supply chain to support sustainable development and promote transport sector sustainability across Arab nations.
The event also highlighted the green hydrogen projects of other Arab countries, such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Mauritania, the UAE, Morocco, and Iraq.
Organised alongside the 37th session of the Council of Arab Transport Ministers and the 73rd session of the Councils Executive Office, the workshop aligns with the decision of the 22nd Joint Meeting of the Technical Committees for Transport, held in September 2024. It underscores the Arab League and Arab Academy’s commitment to fostering innovative energy and climate solutions in collaboration with the European Union, with the aim of maximising clean energy resources and fostering a sustainable economic environment in the Arab world.
