The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has been working on the ‘Qatar Plant Gene Bank Information System’ project in the context of the Arab Plant Gene Banks Information System (APGBIS), the ministry said in a tweet on Wednesday.
The data being collected include relevant information about 655 plants in Qatar, with collection of more than 3,500 samples, according to the tweet.
APGBIS is developed and powered by the Arab Organization For Agricultural Development (AOAD). It aims at laying down a comprehensive action plan for the management of plant genetic resources and gene banks in the Arab states as well as developing an information system and database to function as an early warning mechanism.
It also seeks to protect the intellectual property rights of the Arab states on genetic resources and meet the obligations of the international agreements such as ITPGRFA, CBD and Nagoya Protocol.
