Planning to go for camping this winter? There’s some welcome news for you. Now, you can have a nice winter camping experience, thanks to large number of winter tents being set up in the desert this season.
There has been a sizeable increase in the number of winter tents (Khaima) this year as compared to previous seasons.
Sources said besides locals and Arabs, Asian expats as well as European tourists are enjoying overnight stays in desert camps in the northern part of Qatar.
For those Asians visiting Qatar on arrival visas and European tourists availing tour packages, the winter tents are a great opportunity to explore Qatar and enjoy Arab hospitality.
The strong road network and the packages offered by tour operators and hotels have also made winter Khaima culture popular among Asian and European expatriates.
Winter tents put up by Qatari people have also increased after the blockade. Prior to the
blockade a sizeable section of Qatar’s residents used to spend
their weekends during winter at camps in its neighbouring
countries.
The number of tour operators who approached the authorities concerned to get the approval for having winter tents has increased this season.
The sanctions are normally given to tour operators for a period between November and April. Apart from tour operators and business firms, individuals have set up their own winter tents in the deserts and made elaborate arrangements to host their families and expatriate friends.
Considering the situation, the authorities have allocated and facilitated a long stretch of desert along Rawdat Rashid Road in Al Rayyan Municipality for winter tents since last year.
The night-outs in the desert have become more alive with tents offering varieties of food, music and other attractions.
One of the major attractions of these tents is playing of Arab music in the evenings. Stylish traditional Arabian hanging lamps and campfires are the other prominent features of the tents. While pitching the tents, separate areas are provided for women as well.
An official of Fal Travel Mart, the authorised tour and travel operators of Qatar Tourism Authority, said, “We offer different packages according to size and number of people. The number of tents has increased manifold this year.”
