The Guinness world record for the largest kite ever flown now belongs to a Qatari citizen. Hussain al Khayarin flew the giant kite over Smaisma beach for 20 minutes on Saturday in the presence of officials from the Guinness Book of World Records to bag the honour.
When laid flat, the kite covers a total area of 2,673 square metres. It is 66 metres long and 40.5 metres wide and is made in the colours of the Qatari National Flag. It also features a photo of the Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani.
For Khayarin, this is one of his several initiatives to show the Qatari capabilities to the world, following the unjust blockade imposed on the country by some of its neighbours since June last year.
The kite, Khayarin said, was tested in China the day before and a number of volunteers, including citizens and expatriates, helped him set it up before it was flown to Qatar on Saturday.
“My dream has come true now, I wanted to do something remarkable for my beloved country Qatar and enter the Guinness Book of World records,” he said.
The kite, named Al Majd, was supposed to be flown on the National Day but it was postponed due to some technical issues.
