DOHA: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, in cooperation with Umm Salal Sports Club, launched a cooperation initiative aimed at protecting the nursery and enhancing environmental sustainability in the State of Qatar, within the framework of achieving the objectives of the third strategic plan of Qatar National Vision 2030 in the field of environmental sustainability.
The initiative was launched by Assistant Undersecretary for Protection and Natural Reserves Affairs at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Dr Ibrahim Abdul Latif Al Musalmani, and Vice President of Umm Salal Sports Club and Head of the Football Authority Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, in the presence of Minister of Environment and Climate Change HE DrAbdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, and President of Umm Salal Sports Club Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.
The launch of the initiative reflects the commitment of both sides to develop joint efforts to protect the environment and achieve sustainable development, and to strive to achieve a set of strategic goals, most notably fencing the garden to protect it from encroachment, enhancing environmental awareness of its importance, planting local trees and plants to support the ecosystem and combat desertification, in addition to organizing awareness and volunteer campaigns targeting members of society.
On this occasion, Dr Al Muslimani considered the initiative an important step towards enhancing national efforts to protect the meadows, which are an integral part of Qatar’s natural heritage, pointing to the role of the Ministry’s initiatives in enhancing community awareness of the importance of preserving the environment, and involving various segments of society in efforts to protect biodiversity to contribute to achieving sustainable environmental balance.
He explained that the Ministry will provide all necessary facilities to support this initiative, including providing technical expertise and implementing awareness programmes that contribute to successfully achieving its objectives. He noted the role of Umm Salal Sports Club in this partnership, which represents a distinctive model for the integration of national efforts in protecting the environment and preserving its natural resources.
He pointed out that the initiative's programmes include organising periodic community campaigns and planting local plants, in addition to launching awareness campaigns through various media outlets and social media platforms to inform the public about it and its objectives.
For his part, Sheikh Abdulazizhighlighted that cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in this environmental initiative comes within the framework of social responsibility and active participation in national efforts to protect the environment, noting that sports represent an effective tool for promoting values and spreading awareness among various segments of society.
He praised the close relationship between sports and the environment, as athletes cannot practice any sporting activity except in a suitable and healthy environment, stressing at the same time the importance of sports being compatible with the principles of environmental conservation, and not leading to practices that may negatively affect its sustainability.
