BrusselscTypeface:> The European Union is recalling its ambassador from the West African country of Niger because of a dispute over the allocation of aid funds.
The EU’s diplomatic service said there was “profound disagreement” over the accusations made by Niger’s transitional military government. The Nigerien Foreign Ministry on Friday accused the EU of allocating €1.3mn ($1.35mn) in humanitarian aid to organizations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Danish Refugee Council without consulting the authorities.
This was “in disregard of the principles of transparency and good collaboration,” the ministry said. The EU’s External Action Service accused Niger’s leaders of exploiting humanitarian aid for political ends. (DPA)
