IslamabadcTypeface:> Islamabad remained under a lockdown on Sunday amid a stand-off between the Pakistani government and supporters of the imprisoned former prime minister Imran Khan.
Authorities in the capital deployed riot police and blocked all entry points with hundreds of shipping containers and suspended mobile internet services. At least six motorways and major highways connecting the capital with the rest of the country have also been blocked. "We will maintain the law and order and arrest every single protester,” Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi told media.
Khan’s party has asked workers to assemble in front of the parliament for the protest rally that may be converted into a sit-in until Khan is released. On Thursday, a court in the capital ruled that the protest by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was unlawful. The party said the chief minister of the north-western province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where PTI is in power, is leading the major rally of thousands of workers. (DPA)
