Gaza’s Health Ministry said 35 Palestinians were killed and 94 wounded in the latest 24-hour reporting period as Israeli forces issued new evacuation orders for Gaza City’s Shujayea in the besieged north.
Gaza’s civil defence agency said a drone attack overnight seriously injured a hospital chief in an attack on the healthcare facility, and 11 people were killed in Israeli raids on the Palestinian territory.
Hussam Abu Safia heads the Kamal Adwan Hospital, one of just two partly operating in northern Gaza, as the war-ravaged territory is in the grip of a dire humanitarian crisis.
Abu Safia suffered an injury to his back and left thigh by metal fragments after an attack on the hospital complex, civil defence agency spokesman Mahmoud Basal told AFP. After losing a lot of blood, the doctor was in a "stable” condition, Bassal said, adding an Israeli drone bombed the hospital in Beit Lahiya, north Gaza.
Gaza’s civil defence agency on Sunday morning also said 11 people, "including children”, were killed after two Israeli air attacks on the Bureij and Maghazi refugee camps in central Gaza and artillery fire in Beit Lahiya.
Israel’s genocide in Gaza has killed at least 44,211 Palestinians and wounded 104,567 since October 7, 2023. An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks that day with more than 200 taken captive.
Asem Alnabih, spokesperson for Gaza City Municipality, said heavy rains have been pouring in Gaza City since the morning, raising fears of a water overflow threatening residents due to extensive damage to sewage and stormwater networks.
Since the onset of the aggression, the [Israeli] occupation has destroyed more than 175,000 metres [574,000 feet] of sewage pipelines, 15,000 metres [49,000 feet] of stormwater drainage systems, and 105,000 metres [344,000 feet] of water supply networks, Alnabih said in a post on the X platform.
"There is an urgent need to provide pipes and materials to repair the Sheikh Radwan Basin drainage system,” Alnabih said.
"Delays in providing the necessary pipes and equipment for the Sheikh Radwan drainage repairs could lead to a catastrophic disaster, endangering the lives of residents and displaced families in homes and shelters near the basin.” (Agencies)
