Switzerland and Qatar reaffirmed their strong bilateral relations and shared values during the Swiss Day 2024 celebrations held in Doha.
Organised by the Swiss Embassy under the leadership of Ambassador of Switzerland to Qatar HE Florence Tinguely Mattli, the event brought together distinguished Qatari officials, diplomats, and cultural representatives, underscoring the enduring partnership between the two countries.
Highlighting the significance of the occasion, Ambassador Mattli extended a special welcome to the guest of honour, Minister of Commerce and Industry HE Sheikh Faisal bin Thani Al Thani. Also in attendance were high-profile personalities such as Ibrahim Yousif Abdullah Fakhro, head of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Yusef bin Ali Al Khater, chairman of the Qatar Red Crescent Society and member of the Shura Council.
A partnership beyond borders
In her remarks, Ambassador Mattli emphasized the unique and flourishing relationship between Switzerland, a nation nestled in the heart of Europe, and Qatar, a dynamic country in the Arabian Gulf. “Our partnership demonstrates that geography does not define the bonds of friendship. Instead, shared values and mutual respect form the foundation of our relationship,” she said.
The ambassador noted that the collaboration between Switzerland and Qatar is deeply rooted in common priorities, particularly in economic, scientific, and diplomatic efforts, which have become increasingly relevant amid today’s global challenges.
Economic and scientific innovation at the forefront
Ambassador Mattli highlighted the remarkable strides made by Qatar in advancing its economy and scientific research, areas that have further strengthened ties between the two nations. Earlier this year, Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin, Swiss Minister of Economy, Higher Education, and Research, visited Doha to explore avenues for enhanced cooperation.
Known for its leadership in financial services, pharmaceuticals, and the iconic industries of watches, chocolate, and cheese, Switzerland has also become a global hub for cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and cybersecurity. Switzerland’s status as the world’s most innovative country for the 13th consecutive year has fostered opportunities for collaboration with Qatar in fields such as life sciences, precision medicine, and environmental research.
Shared commitment to peace and diplomacy
The ambassador commended both nations’ dedication to promoting global peace and stability. She cited their successful joint efforts in mediating a prisoner exchange agreement between the U.S. and Iran last year, as well as Qatar’s pivotal role during the Gaza-Israel conflict.
Switzerland continues to advocate for a two-state solution to the ongoing Middle East conflict, urging an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, and the delivery of humanitarian aid. Ambassador Mattli also highlighted Qatar’s contributions to addressing the war in Ukraine, including reuniting displaced children with their families and participating in international peacebuilding initiatives.

Reflecting on the evening’s theme, ‘Tradition and Innovation,’ Ambassador Mattli noted the shared vision of Switzerland and Qatar in preserving cultural heritage while embracing modernization. She praised Qatar’s efforts to balance rapid development with its cultural and social values, a principle that resonates deeply with Switzerland’s ethos.
In her closing remarks, Ambassador Mattli expressed her gratitude to all attendees and reiterated Switzerland’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Qatar. “Together, we can continue to navigate global challenges and work toward a future defined by peace, innovation, and cultural preservation,” she concluded.
