Brian Thompson, the 50-year-old chief executive of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot early Wednesday in Manhattan, the New York Police Department (NYPD) said, adding that it appeared to be a deliberate act of violence.
Thompson was attacked near a hotel and residential building close to Times Square, where his company was set to host an investor event, the NYPD said. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch called it a “brazen targeted attack” during a press conference. New York Mayor Eric Adams also said that it was not a random act of violence.
Police helicopters continued to circle the city as the investigation progressed. The motive for the attack is currently unknown. Thompson sustained gunshot wounds and died in hospital shortly after. Thompson, a Minnesota resident, was travelling without a bodyguard.
Investigators are still searching for the suspect and are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. The UnitedHealth Group issued a statement expressing shock and grief over Thompson’s death.
