QTerminals on Wednesday welcomed the inaugural call of Hapag Lloyd’s Indian Subcontinent Express (IMX) service at Hamad Port.
Hapag Lloyd is the fifth largest shipping company globally in terms of container throughput.
Two main line services of Hapag Lloyd and partners call directly at Hamad Port:
1. Gulf/East Mediterranean Service (GEM), which connects East Mediterranean (Turkey). Service partners are Hapag Lloyd, CMA-CGM and COSCO. The GEM service started in November last year.
2. Indian Subcontinent Express (IMX), which connects West Mediterranean. Service partners are Hapag Lloyd as service leader with 4 vessels, CMA with three vessels and COSCO with one vessel.
Speaking on the occasion, the CEO of QTerminals Neville Bissett said, We are very happy to welcome this new IMX service to QTerminals’ CT1. We are confident that this new service will not only serve Qatar’s economy and trade, but will also significantly increase the connectivity of Hamad Port with three very important regional markets i.e. the subcontinent, the Middle-East and the Mediterranean regions.
As Qatar’s economy and trade continues to diversify and grow, developing trade with new international partners is always of importance for existing times and the future. With the global strength of Hapag-Lloyd and their partners COSCO and CMA-CGM, this formidable new service will open doors with direct connectivity to an array of international ports. This leads to gaining direct access to newer markets and trade hubs for Qatar and in particular Hamad Port.”
According to the CEO, this is a record breaking achievement and places Hamad Port in the list of top performing ports in the world. "Due to this growth, QTerminals has been awarded the concession for the design, development and operations of Container Terminal-2 in Hamad Port, which we have planned to be developed in phases. CT2 is expected to start operations in 2020. This will ensure that Hamad Port is completely prepared to handle the forecast significant volume surge for the FIFA 2022 World Cup. The development of CT2 also fully aligns with Qatar Vision 2030 initiatives.”
He added, "QTerminals is targeting substantial growth in 2019, especially in container traffic, as Hamad Port positions itself as a trans-shipment hub for the mid and upper Gulf ports. This is complimented with organic GDP growth.
Eng Nabil al Khaldi from Mwani Qatar and Joerg Sonne, managing director of Hapag-Lloyd Middle-East attended the event.
