Qatar and China pledged to take bilateral relations to new heights as the Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani and Chinese President Xi Jinping held official talks at the Beijing People’s Palace on Thursday.
The two countries signed a series of agreements, including a MoU on establishing a strategic dialogue mechanism to strengthen the bilateral relations.
During the talks, the Amir and the Chinese President discussed means of enhancing bilateral relations and strategic partnership, especially in the fields of military, security cooperation, economy, investment, trade, finance, banking, energy, technology, culture, education, tourism, sports and youth.
They also discussed the latest developments, especially the Gulf crisis and China’s position on the importance of resolving it through diplomatic dialogue, while supporting Qatar’s sovereignty.
At the outset of the talks, the Chinese president welcomed the Amir and the accompanying delegation.
Jinping mentioned the Chinese Cultural Year organised in Qatar and the agreement on exempting citizens of the two countries from entry visa. Jinping pointed out that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of China, a crucial year in which China aspires to endeavour for further development and advancement. He noted Qatar’s readiness to host the FIFA World Cup in 2022, and implement various projects to achieve the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030.
He said the Amir’s visit to China would yield several results. The two countries would reach consensus on various issues and the visit would raise the level of cooperation between them.
The Chinese president also congratulated the Amir on Qatar qualifying for the final of the Asian Football Cup.
The Amir expressed pleasure at visiting Beijing and extended greetings to the president and the Chinese people on the new Chinese Year, wishing them further progress and prosperity. The Amir referred to the first meeting between His Highness and the Chinese President in 2008, expressing his happiness with his personal friendship with the president as well as the friendly relations between the two countries.
The Amir pointed to his visit to China in 2014 and the signing of the joint declaration on establishing strategic partnership between the two countries. The Amir expressed Qatar’s readiness to establish a greater partnership with China.
On the Chinese Cultural Year in Qatar, the Amir said its events have contributed to enhancing cultural exchange between the two countries.
The Amir said investments and trade have significantly increased in the past two years and Qatar is looking forward to increasing them. The Amir expressed confidence in the Chinese economy and Jinping’s vision and plans for the future of China’s economy.

On energy, the Amir said a partnership pact was recently signed to supply LNG to China for 22 years, stressing that the parties concerned are in the process of discussing signing of other agreements, voicing Qatar’s readiness to supply more LNG to China.
