AMMAN: Six people were killed and 60 others were injured in a fire that broke out in a private centre for elderly care in the Jordanian capital, Amman.

Jordanian Minister of Social Development Wafa Bani Mustafa said in a statement, "Six residents died, five others sustained serious injuries and 55 sustained moderate injuries, as a result of a fire that broke out on the first floor of the White Family Association - Elderly Guest House, a private centre for the care of the elderly."

The minister said that the fire spread in the centre, which houses 111 residents, over an area of ​​80 square meters, where the remaining elderly were evacuated to other centres, in addition to transferring the injured to government hospitals to receive treatment.

The minister confirmed the safety of all the elderly who were evacuated, noting that investigations are ongoing to determine the causes of the fire.
