BerlincTypeface:> A potential peace in Ukraine can only be secured if a peacekeeping force of up to 150,000 armed soldiers can be deployed, according to an Austrian military expert.
Colonel Markus Reisner of the Austrian Armed Forces told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper in an article published on Saturday that his view is that “at least 100,000 to 150,000 soldiers would be necessary for successful peacekeeping in Ukraine.” The number of peacekeeping troops could be reduced at a later stage.
“But especially at the start of such a mission, a complex logistics operation is required, such as carefully conducted mine clearance along the front line.” If the forces are small, the likelihood of ceasefire violations is significantly higher. Reisner served in Afghanistan and Iraq among other deployments and is considered an international military expert. (DPA)
