London: Alexander Sorloth’s second-half header proved enough for Atletico Madrid to sink Getafe 1-0 and extend their winning streak in all competitions to 11 matches. Sorloth latched on to a fine 69th-minute cross from Nahuel Molina to secure the points that lifted Atletico above their city rivals Real and, temporarily at least, level on points with Barcelona at the top of the table. If it was far from a repeat of their recent high-octane win over Sevilla in a seven-goal thriller it will have proved equally satisfying for boss Diego Simeone to see the manner of their hard-fought home win. Getafe went into the game off the back of a win over Espanyol last week but it was the hosts who had all the ball in the early stages and Brazilian winger Samuel Lino sent two golden opportunities wide of target. Visiting goalkeeper David Soria had to be on top form to stop a shot from Julian Alvarez then Giuliano Simeone flashed a header wide as Atletico’s lack of accuracy in front of goal threatened to cost them dear. Sorloth replaced the misfiring Lino at half-time and Pablo Barrios flashed an effort against the crossbar before Atletico were served a warning when Jose Maria Gimenez almost deflected in an own goal on the hour mark.

Sorloth’s effort spared Atletico’s blushes and the hosts played out the final stages with the minimum of fuss to claim an important win. (PA Media/dpa)
