Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal is expected to be sidelined for up to four weeks after suffering an ankle injury during Sunday’s defeat to Leganes.
The 17-year-old Spain international was forced off in the 75th minute of the shock 1-0 home loss after receiving a blow to his right ankle.
Following further tests on Monday, it was revealed Yamal had suffered ligament damage and will be out until the new year.
A club statement read: “Tests carried out on Monday have revealed that the player has a grade 1 injury to the anterior tibiofibular ligament in the ankle. The player is expected to be out for 3 to 4 weeks.” The injury news will be another blow to Barcelona, who have won just one of their last six LaLiga matches and seen their lead at the top of the table cut by title rivals Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.
Yamal will miss Saturday’s visit of second-placed Atletico - who are one point behind Hansi Flick’s side - in Barca’s final match before the winter break but could be back in time for the Spanish Super Cup clash against Athletic Bilbao at the start of January.
