Harry Kane is fit again but coach Vincent Kompany has left it open whether he will start in Bayern Munich’s final game of the year on Friday against RB Leipzig.
Striker Kane has been sidelined since the end of November with a thigh muscle strain. His return could help the team end the first part of the season on a high after they lost for the first time in the Bundesliga last weekend at Mainz.
“I won’t say whether he’ll start or not. The final training session is still important today. If everything goes well, he’ll definitely play a part tomorrow,” Kompany told reporters on Thursday.
“Harry has this incredible sense of where he needs to be in the box. He’s also helped us a lot in defence. He’s one of the best in the world in the box - that’s where he makes the difference. There aren’t many players who can do that.” Full back Alphonso Davies is also set to return for leaders Bayern who will hibernate on top regardless of the outcome, due to their four-point lead over champions Bayer Leverkusen, but they want to make up for the Mainz defeat.
“I always want to win. That’s the case every game, whether it’s the first or the last one. Of course, you’re more motivated when you lose. My wish is that this game will wrap up the first part well,” Kompany said.
Kompany said that fourth-placed Leipzig, who have steadied the ship again with two straight league wins after a bad November spell, have “individual and collective quality [that] is right up there in the Bundesliga.
“They have players who are difference makers, but so do we. It’s very clear to me what we want to do. We’re playing at home and we want to win,” he said.
